Manuscript Revelation Books opens a new series of The Joseph Smith Papers that will provide transcripts of many of the earliest manuscripts of Joseph Smith's revelations and translations, together with reproductions of editions of these documents that were published during his lifetime. This volume features Revelation Book 1 and Revelation Book 2, two large manuscript books into which scores of Smith's early revelations were copied by early church leaders and scribes.

The present volume, besides being the first in the Revaltions and Translations series, is also the first of a small number of volumes in The Joseph Smith Papers to be presented in a facsimile edition. Designed to allow maximum access to the original texts, the volumes of the facsimile edition provide a photographic facsimile of each page of the original document arranged in a parallel format with a transcript of that page. Other features of this volume include:

- Verified document transcripts that reproduce the original manuscripts of these foundational documents just as they appear today, preserving corrections and revisions of any kind.
- A color key that renders each scribe's handwriting in a different color to facilitate analysis of original inscriptions and revisions.
