The years of the nineteenth century were full of war and conflict. During these pivotal years, the fledgling United States faced territorial wars, a bitter civil war, and wars against Spain and Mexico that thrust her into the international spotlight.

This century also featured the beginning of a unique religious movement with the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For Church members who cherished and valued the religious freedoms of America, these were challenging years.

Beginning with persecutions in New York and Ohio that spread to Missouri and Illinois, the Saints found themselves abandoned by their government and its laws. Their prophet carefully reminded them of the Lord's doctrine regarding war and violence and of their obligation to be loyal to their country.

They were not to retaliate, even until the third offense, but were counseled to allow the Lord to try their faith and to support them in their battles. While most of the literature of this period focuses on the experience of the Church itself, this volume places the Church experience as it relates to war.

Throughout the nineteenth century, Latter-day Saints in the United States showed their loyalty in heeding the call to serve their country. This volume seeks to honor those faithful soldiers of the latter days and to recognize their valuable contribution to history and the freedoms we enjoy.
